Total nonfarm payroll employment in Wichita fell by 22,500 jobs in May, 7.3 percent below the same month in 2019. The Wichita unemployment rate was 14.2 percent in May, up from 3.3 percent a year earlier. The number of people unemployed across the metropolitan area rose to 46,918 in May, an increase of 345.1 percent over the prior year, while the labor force rose by 4.9 percent to 330,480.
