The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) uses data from the two large secondary market agencies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, to produce home price indexes for markets across the U.S. These indexes measure true underlying same-home price appreciation.

Non-farm employment data

In the establishment survey, the BLS tallies the number of employees at businesses by industry and job category across the U.S. This is the source of the employment statistics reported each month.

Unemployment rate data

The BLS also surveys households to determine what fraction of those in the labor force actually have jobs. This is the unemployment rate.

The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) publishes a weekly survey of contract mortgage rates.

Census Building Permits

The U.S. Census Bureau surveys local permitting offices across the country to estimate the number of residential building permits issued in various states and metropolitan areas. These include breakdowns for single-family, two-to-four family, and multi-family permits.
