Residential real estate sales and brokerage is probably the most familiar—and most common—career in the real estate industry. Real estate agents and brokers are the professionals who help buyers and sellers of real estate find one another and work through the transaction process.

A brokerage firm is a company that employs real estate agents and brokers. Most people who work for brokerage firms are agents, although some go on to get their license as a real estate broker (click here to find out more about licensing). If you are interested in a career as a real estate agent, then the best way to get started is to contact local brokerage firms about internships or starting positions that they may have available. Many of the firms have training programs that are specifically designed to pair you with experienced agents and guide you through the process of getting your real estate license.
