Total nonfarm payroll employment in Topeka fell by 8,100 jobs in May, 7.2 percent below the same month in 2019. The Topeka unemployment rate was 10.1 percent in May, up from 3.2 percent a year earlier. The number of people unemployed across the metropolitan area rose to 12,010 in May, an increase of 209.8 percent over the prior year, while the labor force fell by 0.4 percent to 119,013.
