Total nonfarm payroll employment in Topeka fell by 9,600 jobs in April, 8.6 percent below the same month in 2019. The Topeka unemployment rate was 12.3 percent in April, up from 3.3 percent a year earlier. The number of people unemployed across the metropolitan area rose to 14,778 in April, an increase of 276.7 percent over the prior year, while the labor force rose by 0.7 percent to 120,023.
