Total nonfarm payroll employment in Manhattan fell by 2,000 jobs in August, 4.9 percent below the same month in 2019. The Manhattan unemployment rate was 6.7 percent in July, the most recent month for which data are available, up from 2.7 percent a year earlier. The number of people unemployed across the metropolitan area rose to 2,994 in July, an increase of 130.1 percent over the prior year, while the labor force fell by 5.3 percent to 44,955.
