Total nonfarm payroll employment in Kansas City fell by 99,100 jobs in May, 9.0 percent below the same month in 2019. The Kansas City unemployment rate was 11.0 percent in May, up from 3.2 percent a year earlier. The number of people unemployed across the metropolitan area rose to 123,352 in May, an increase of 238.5 percent over the prior year, while the labor force fell by 0.9 percent to 1,125,113.
