Total nonfarm payroll employment in Wichita fell by 600 jobs in April, 0.2 percent below the same month in 2016. The Wichita unemployment rate was 4.2 percent in March, the most recent month for which data are available, down from 4.5 percent a year earlier. The number of people unemployed across the metropolitan area fell to 12,949 in March, a decline of 7.7 percent from the prior year, while the labor force fell by 0.8 percent to 307,572.
