Total nonfarm payroll employment in Topeka rose by 800 jobs in August, 0.7 percent above the same month in 2016. The Topeka unemployment rate was 3.9 percent in July, the most recent month for which data are available, down from 4.2 percent a year earlier. The number of people unemployed across the metropolitan area fell to 4,709 in July, a decline of 6.8 percent from the prior year, while the labor force rose by 0.7 percent to 122,111.
